      Ghent has made most of its city centre car-free, and a coach is no exception. For a group that is more of an advantage than a burden: you get off on the edge of the centre and walk along the water in a quarter of an hour to the Gravensteen castle, the Graslei or St Bavo's Cathedral. If you know that in advance, you allow a few minutes' walk and are not caught out on the pavement.

      From Ghent, groups often set off for the coast, for the Flemish Ardennes around Oudenaarde, or along the E17 towards Antwerp and the Netherlands. Two motorways, the E17 and the E40, cross close to the city, so a coach can easily head in any direction. In July, during the Gentse Feesten festival, it is extra busy around the centre; bear that in mind if you leave or arrive then.

      Taking a coach to Ghent

      • The centre of Ghent, the area inside the ring road, is a low-emission zone, and buses and coaches also have to meet the standards.
      • If the vehicle does not have a Belgian or Dutch number plate, it must always register.
      • A large part of the historic centre is a car-free area; a hotel in that area can apply for a permit to drop off and pick up hotel guests by coach.
      • Coaches park at Parking Gent-Dampoort (space for 24 coaches) and Parking Yachtdreef by the Watersportbaan (14 coaches), among other places.
      • Dropping passengers off elsewhere is only allowed where stopping is permitted under the Highway Code, and for no longer than needed to get on and off.

      In the car-free area only with a permit, for example through your hotel. Elsewhere a coach may stop briefly to let people get on and off, as long as the Highway Code allows it there and nobody is obstructed.

      Does a coach from the Netherlands have to register for the LEZ in Ghent?

      According to Visit Gent, a vehicle without a Belgian or Dutch number plate must always register. Whether the coach is allowed in depends on its Euro standard and fuel; the coach company knows that for its own coaches.
