A coach for your multi-day trip

For many Flemish clubs, a trip of several days by coach is the highlight of the year: a tour of Alsace, a few days in Paris, the Christmas markets in Germany or a pilgrimage to Lourdes. The coach is then more than transport: it is where the group gathers every morning and returns every evening.

On a trip like this there are two ways of working with the coach. Either the coach stays with the group for the whole trip, and the driver drives the local outings every day. Or the coach takes the group to the destination, drives back, and comes to pick them up again on the last day. Which suits best depends on the programme and the distance.

The driver has to keep to European rules on how long he drives and how long he rests. On a long trip those rules help decide what the days look like, and sometimes whether a second driver comes along.

Enter your trip and you will see the prices of the participating coach companies side by side, including companies from the Netherlands that drive in Belgium. The Flemish coach companies on this page are not taking part yet: they are listed without a price with your trip, and you can invite them from there.

      Arranging the coach

Draw up an itinerary for each day: departure, distance, the local outings and the rest days. Say whether the coach stays with the group. If the driver stays overnight, he needs a room of his own; ask the coach company how it arranges that and whether you book it with the hotel yourself.

Good to know, with the source

      • A driver drives at most 9 hours a day; twice a week this may be 10 hours.
      • He drives at most 56 hours a week, and at most 90 hours over two weeks together.
      • His daily rest is at least 11 hours; three times a week it may be shorter, down to 9 hours.
      • The driver of a coach on a single international group trip may postpone his weekly rest until after 12 days, to make such a trip possible.

      Frequently asked questions

Questions about a coach for your multi-day trip

Does the driver need a hotel room of his own?

Yes, if he stays with the group. Agree with the coach company who books the room, and whether his meals are included.

How much may a driver drive on a long trip?

Under the European rules, at most nine hours a day, ten twice a week, 56 hours a week and 90 hours over two weeks. In between he has a rest period of at least eleven hours every day, which may be shorter three times a week.

Can the coach also drive local outings during the trip?

Yes, if it stays with the group. Put the outings in the itinerary; the coach company takes them into account for the driving and rest times.
