      In December the Ghent Winter Festival (Gentse Winterfeesten) fills the historic centre: the Christmas market with its stalls, the big wheel on the Korenmarkt, the lit Christmas tree on Goudeleeuwplein by the Belfry and an ice rink under the Stadshal. The 2026 edition runs from Thursday 3 December to Sunday 3 January.

      By coach, Ghent is a city with rules. The area inside the city ring is a low-emission zone, for buses and coaches too, and a large part of the centre is car-free. A coach may drop passengers off where stopping is allowed under the highway code, but may not wait for a group that is not there yet: the police can issue a fine for that.

      That is why the coach goes to a coach car park after dropping off. The city names two among others: Gent-Dampoort, next to the station and St Bavo's Abbey, and Yachtdreef on the Watersportbaan.

      By coach to Ghent

      • Ghent has a low-emission zone; if the vehicle has no Belgian or Dutch number plate, it must always register.
      • Parking Gent-Dampoort has room for 24 coaches, Parking Yachtdreef on the Watersportbaan for 14.
      • A coach that is parked or waiting for passengers who are not there yet can be fined; it stops no longer than needed for getting on and off.
      • Dropping hotel guests off in the car-free area is only possible with a permit requested by the hotel.

      Arranging the coach

      Tell the coach company that the trip ends in Ghent's low-emission zone; a coach with a foreign number plate must always register. Agree a place where the group gets off and a fixed time when the coach comes back to pick up, because waiting in the centre is not allowed. For a group that is not steady on its feet, choose a drop-off point close to the Korenmarkt, and fix it with the driver in advance.
