Arranging wheelchair-accessible transport: what to look for

Not every bus that is called "accessible" works the same way, and not every coach company has one in its fleet as standard. This helps you ask the right questions in advance.

Part 1 of 3

What "wheelchair-accessible" can actually mean

This ranges from a low step with a short ramp to a full electric lift, with a fixed wheelchair space and matching tie-downs on board. Always ask exactly which version a coach company has, rather than relying on the label "accessible" alone.

Part 2 of 3

What this means for planning

Getting on and off with a lift or ramp takes longer than a normal step. Allow a few extra minutes each time, especially with several pick-up or drop-off points. Mention this in advance, so it is already built into the coach company's planning.

Part 3 of 3

What it's best to tell them in advance

The number of wheelchair spaces you need, whether the wheelchairs are electric or manual (this can matter for the weight and the tie-downs), and whether anyone in the group has other specific needs. The more concrete the request, the better a coach company can judge in advance whether the vehicle is suitable.

Frequently asked questions

Does every coach company have a wheelchair-accessible bus?

No, these are less widely available than a standard coach. BusOffer.com shows this as a separate filter, so you immediately see only the coach companies that actually offer one.

Does a wheelchair-accessible bus cost more?

This varies by coach company and type of vehicle. Ask for a concrete price estimate to see it for your route and group size.

Can I request several wheelchair spaces at once?

State the number clearly in your request; not every bus has room for more than one wheelchair at a time, so it's best if the coach company can think along with you in advance about a suitable solution.
