When it fits, when it doesn’t

When is a wheelchair-accessible bus the right choice, and when not?

A wheelchair-accessible bus is needed as soon as someone stays seated in their wheelchair during the journey. There's then a lift or a ramp, and there are fixed anchor points. The latter isn't a detail; it's precisely what makes it safe. If everyone can board independently and the wheelchair travels folded up as luggage, a regular bus is enough and often cheaper.

Also bear in mind that wheelchair spaces and regular seats come at each other's expense: the same vehicle with three wheelchair spaces has fewer seats than without.

What to look out for with a wheelchair-accessible bus

  1. Give the number of wheelchairs and the number of other passengers separately: one comes at the expense of the other.
  2. Mention the type of wheelchair: an electric wheelchair is heavier and bigger than a manual one.
  3. Ask whether there's a lift or a ramp; at a high kerb they don't always work the same way.
  4. If you need assistance getting on and off, say so in your request.

Request your wheelchair-accessible bus with no obligation via BusOffer

On most comparison sites, wheelchair accessibility is a single tick box somewhere at the bottom of a form. On BusOffer.com it is a filter of its own: under vehicle type, switch on "Wheelchair-accessible bus" and you only see vehicles that are. How many wheelchairs are coming, you tell us in your request.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about hiring a wheelchair-accessible bus

How many wheelchair spaces does a wheelchair-accessible bus have?

That varies per vehicle. Tell us in your request how many wheelchairs are coming; the coach company confirms in its offer whether that fits.

Is extra assistance possible?

Mention it in your request. The coach company says in its offer whether it can be arranged.

Can a wheelchair also travel folded up as luggage?

Yes, and then you don't need a wheelchair-accessible bus: a regular bus with luggage space is enough and usually cheaper. A wheelchair-accessible bus is meant for people who stay seated in their wheelchair during the journey.

How many regular seats are left?

That depends on the number of wheelchair spaces used: each wheelchair space takes up the room of several seats. Give both numbers in your request, so the coach company can plan for it.

How much more does a wheelchair-accessible bus cost than a regular bus?

That varies by coach company and by vehicle. Enter your trip and the difference appears in the price estimate alongside the other options, instead of you having to ask.
