      A school trip to Rome

Written and checked by Martijn Smeets, founder of BusOffer.com. Content last updated: October 2026.

Rome is too far to reach in one day with one driver: a driver may drive for at most nine hours a day. So the choice is an overnight stop on the way, or a second driver so the coach can keep going. You will see that in the price breakdown once you have filled in your trip, and also what difference it makes if the coach drives home in between instead of staying in Italy.

In Rome itself a coach cannot go everywhere. The centre within the ZTL BUS C zone is closed to coaches, except with a special permit. Since 1 January 2026 Roma Mobilità has only sold coach permits online, and for foreign schools there is a permit at a lower rate. Ask the coach company whether it arranges this, and agree where the group gets on and off.

      • The whole class travels together, so nobody arrives separately or late
      • No hassle arranging and insuring several parents' cars
      • The driver drives and finds the way, so no parent has to navigate

      What the place itself says

What Rome and the government say

      • The centre of Rome within the ZTL BUS C zone is closed to coaches, except with a special permit (autorizzazione C).
      • Since 1 January 2026, coach permits can only be bought online.
      • For foreign schools there is a permit at a lower rate (permesso B).

      • A coach driver drives at most 9 hours a day, and twice a week at most 10 hours.
      • After 4.5 hours of driving there is a 45-minute break; with two drivers, only a stop to swap is needed.

Rules like these change. Have another look at the Roma Mobilità website before you leave, and ask the coach company about the permit.

How far is Rome by coach?

      When

In which month a coach costs more or less

The difference per month for a school trip to Rome, compared with an ordinary month. A coach company can apply this more or less strongly for itself.

On top of that, a Saturday, a Sunday or public holiday, or a trip at night can cost extra. What it means for your day to Rome, you see as soon as you fill in your trip.

      Preparation

      Three things to arrange

      Before you send a request

      • Explicitly ask for the driver's VOG (the Dutch certificate of conduct, a background check)
      • Count the supervisors in the number of people: you hire the whole coach, and they need a seat too
      • Check the first aid equipment on board

What does coach hire to Rome cost?

For Rome, what counts most is the second driver or the overnight stop on the way, the tolls on the route and the number of days the coach stays with the group. Once you have filled in your trip, each of those items appears separately in the price breakdown. What you finally pay depends on your place of departure, the type of coach and the date.

      Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about coach hire to Rome

Can a coach reach Rome in one day?

Not with one driver: a driver may drive for at most nine hours a day, and ten twice a week. With two drivers the coach can get further, or the group stays overnight on the way. Fill in your trip and discuss with the coach company which of the two it will be.

Can the coach get close to the sights in Rome?

Not in the centre: the ZTL BUS C zone is closed to coaches, except with a special permit. Agree with the coach company where the group gets on and off.

Is the price estimate I see final?

No, it is a price estimate based on your route and group size, not a confirmation of availability. The coach company itself confirms the final price and availability after you have sent a no-obligation booking request.

Does it cost anything to request a booking?

No, requesting a booking is always free and without obligation. You are not committed to anything until the coach company has confirmed the final price and availability and you agree.
