      A school trip to Paris

Written and checked by Martijn Smeets, founder of BusOffer.com. Content last updated: October 2026.

The day of departure is the hardest part of a study trip to Paris. A driver may drive for at most nine hours a day, with a break after four and a half hours, and a class also makes its own stops along the way. So plan an early departure, or choose a programme in which the first day is mainly travelling.

In a French low-emission zone, such as that of the Métropole du Grand Paris, a vehicle may only drive with a Crit'Air vignette. A coach with a foreign registration can only apply for that vignette online. Ask the coach company whether it has been arranged for your coach.

      • The whole class travels together, so nobody arrives separately or late
      • No hassle arranging and insuring several parents' cars
      • The driver drives and finds the way, so no parent has to navigate

      What the place itself says

What the French and Dutch governments say

      • In a French low-emission zone (ZFE-m) a Crit'Air vignette is compulsory.
      • For a vehicle with a foreign registration, you can only apply for the vignette online.

      • A coach driver drives at most 9 hours a day, and twice a week at most 10 hours.
      • After 4.5 hours of driving there is a 45-minute break; with two drivers, only a stop to swap is needed.

Rules like these change. Have another look at Service-Public.fr before you leave, and ask the coach company about the vignette.

      When

In which month a coach costs more or less

The difference per month for a school trip to Paris, compared with an ordinary month. A coach company can apply this more or less strongly for itself.

On top of that, a Saturday, a Sunday or public holiday, or a trip at night can cost extra. What it means for your day to Paris, you see as soon as you fill in your trip.

      Preparation

      Three things to arrange

      Before you send a request

      • Explicitly ask for the driver's VOG (the Dutch certificate of conduct, a background check)
      • Count the supervisors in the number of people: you hire the whole coach, and they need a seat too
      • Check the first aid equipment on board

What does coach hire to Paris cost?

For Paris it matters whether the coach stays with the group all week, or takes the group there and picks them up again at the end. If it stays, you pay for the driver's nights; if it drives back in between, it also drives the route empty. Enter your dates and we work out both, and the French tolls appear as a separate item in the breakdown. What you finally pay depends on your place of departure, the type of coach and the date.

      Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about coach hire to Paris

Does a coach to Paris need an environmental sticker?

In a French low-emission zone, such as that of Greater Paris, a Crit'Air vignette is compulsory. For a coach with a Dutch registration, the coach company applies for it online. Check if you are unsure.

Are the French tolls included in the price for Paris?

Yes. In the price you see after filling in your trip, the tolls appear as a separate item. The coach company then confirms the final amount itself.

Is the price estimate I see final?

No, it is a price estimate based on your route and group size, not a confirmation of availability. The coach company itself confirms the final price and availability after you have sent a no-obligation booking request.

Does it cost anything to request a booking?

No, requesting a booking is always free and without obligation. You are not committed to anything until the coach company has confirmed the final price and availability and you agree.
